Day 1: City & History Tour
Morning: 07:00
After breakfast at your Sandton/Sandton-area hotel (included), your private guide and driver will meet you for a panoramic city tour. Begin with a drive through the leafy suburbs of Parktown and the commercial district
08:30 – Arrive at Constitution Hill: The former prison and military fort where Mandela and other political prisoners were once held. Explore the complex (guided tour) including the Old Fort and Women’s Jail, learning how it “tells the story of South Africa’s journey to democracy”. You will see the striking new Constitutional Court building (South Africa’s highest court) on site. Transfer: Private air-conditioned vehicle. Included: Guided visit and entry to Constitution Hill,
Midday: – Depart Constitutional Hill and drive downtown toward Newtown. Stop at the Nelson Mandela Bridge, a sleek blue-lit landmark that “links older streets with newer areas,” symbolizing unity and connecting Braamfontein to Newtown. Spend a few minutes taking photos of the bridge (which spans the city’s railway yard).
12:00 – Arrive at the Apartheid Museum (Ormonde)
You have tickets for a self-guided tour of this world-class museum (open 9:00–17:00 Wed–Sun). Its powerful exhibits of film, photos and artifacts trace South Africa’s segregation era. The museum “is fundamental” for understanding the apartheid era, and is described as a “beacon of hope” for South Africa’s journey past oppression. Included: Entrance fee to Apartheid Museum.
Lunch: Enjoy a buffet-style lunch at the museum’s restaurant ( lunch on own account), featuring local fare.
Afternoon: – After lunch, your guide will drive you through the cultural district of Maboneng (a vibrant arts precinct) and then return you to your hotel. In the evening, enjoy a gourmet dinner at one of Jo’burg’s upscale restaurants (Suggestion) a modern South African bistro in Melrose Arch or a fine dining steakhouse in Sandton. (on own account)
Day 2: Soweto & Mandela Legacy
Morning: 08:00 – Breakfast at the hotel (included), then depart for Soweto (“South Western Townships”) – 40 minutes’ drive via highway.
Visit the Nelson Mandela Family Museum at 8115 Vilakazi Street, Orlando West. This was Mandela’s home from 1946 to 1962 and is now a small museum dedicated to his life. You will walk through the four-room house filled with family photos, memorabilia and even Nelson Mandela’s honorary doctorates. Your guide explains the exhibits and the family’s story.
Vilakazi Street Walk: After Mandela’s house, stroll along Vilakazi Street – famously “the only street in the world where two Nobel Prize winners (Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu) have lived”. See (from outside) Desmond Tutu’s house and that of other Soweto icons. Included: Entrance to Mandela House.
Late Morning: – Drive a short distance to the Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum (Khumalo Street). This poignant museum commemorates the June 16, 1976 student uprising. Learn how 13-year-old Hector Pieterson was killed by police during the Soweto protests. The museum features enlarged photographs and films about the youth rebellion. In the adjacent memorial garden, you will see a wall inscribed with the names of students killed on that day. Included: Entrance to Hector Pieterson Museum.
Lunch: – Enjoy a hearty lunch at a local Soweto restaurant , sampling township specialties like braai (barbecue) meats or a traditional Sotho platter(. own account)
Afternoon: – Visit the Soweto Heritage and Cultural Centre Museum (at Maponya Mall). This museum traces Soweto’s history from its rural origins through apartheid and liberation. Exhibits include township artifacts, history panels, and artworks. Included: Entrance to Soweto Museum.
Return drive to Johannesburg city center. On the way back, your guide can point out the famous Orlando Towers (colorfully painted former power-station towers in Soweto) from the bus window. 17:00 – Arrive back at your hotel.
Day 3: Lesedi Cultural Village and Pilanesberg Safari
Early Morning: 06.00 – After an early hotel breakfast (included), depart by private 4×4 safari vehicle for Pilanesberg National Park, about 2–3 hours northwest of Jo’burg. The park is a rugged 55,000-hectare reserve in an extinct volcanic crater.
– Arrive at Pilanesberg. Meet your game ranger and begin a guided game drive (open-air safari vehicle). Over the next 3–4 hours, search for the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino) in their natural habitat. You may also spot giraffe, zebra, hippo, antelope and over 300 bird species. Included: Park entrance fees, morning game-drive with guide.
Lunch: – Break at a park rest camp for a picnic or buffet lunch (on own account)
Mid-Afternoon: – Leave Pilanesberg and drive south (approx. 1.5 hours) to Lesedi Cultural Village.
Cultural Village: – Arrive at Lesedi Cultural Village in the Cradle of Humankind region. Lesedi (“light” in the Sotho language) showcases five traditional Southern African homesteads (Zulu, Xhosa, Pedi, Basotho and Ndebele). Over the next two hours, enjoy a guided tour of the village: watch a lively performance of tribal music and dance, meet the homestead families, and learn about customs and crafts. As described by visitors, Lesedi is “a fascinating exploration of Africa’s tribal history”.
Dinner: – Experience a traditional “Great African Feast” at the Nyama Choma restaurant on site. This buffet includes meat specialties (e.g. braaied game, ostrich, crocodile) and homestyle Sotho and Zulu dishes, served in themed dining huts. After dinner, if timing allows, enjoy one final dance show as the evening concludes. Included: Lesedi Village entrance, guided tour, African buffet dinner.
Evening Transfer: 19:00 – Return back to hotel in johannesburg
